Arcadia takes place in the same English estate but weaves between two sets of characters in two different time periods, the early 1800’s and present day, until the end of the play when the time periods have blended and characters overlap in time and space.I wanted my sound choices to support that.
The director and I chose a selection of minimalist modern compositions as the primary content for the present day. I hired a pianist to create classical riffs on those modern tracks, and worked with him to make high quality recordings. In the show, I then used blends of the modern track with measures of the classical piano to enhance the shifts between time periods. Additional effects such as period gunshots, steam engines, grouse bird calls were also a part of my design.
